Many people doing boxing workouts are ignoring good technique, or form, and are cheating themselves out of results. Too many people swing their punches like they are in a spaghetti western. Technique Tip #1 - Float Like a Butterfly
We've all heard this, but what does it mean? And why will it get you fitter? Floating like a butterfly means to get up on the balls of your feet and move. You don't have to dance around like Ali but you do need to change the weight between front foot and back foot, instead of just standing flat-footed. In a word Float. Do this between every punch combination and you will get fitter, quicker, You'll be burning more calories and really working your legs.
Technique Tip #2 - Feel the Leather
Feeling the leather is a simple way to remember to keep your hands up. You actually feel the leather of your gloves on your face, so you know your hands are being held high. Do you know the most common error of Fitness Boxers when they start? You guessed it. They drop their hands. Even though we are only training for fitness, not fighting, keeping your guard up is vital. You will also be mentally ready - a bit like a tennis player with their racket up, ready to receive serve.
Technique Tip # 3 - Follow Through
One of my early martial arts teachers told me to never throw half a punch. In other words, like a good tennis shot or golf swing, follow through with every punch. Bruce Lee told us not to punch at, but through. This makes every punch go the distance. If forces you to engage the correct core and abdominal muscles and it forces you to put your whole body into your punch - giving you a much better workout.
Follow these three boxing technique tips as you work out and you will turbo charge your results. Remind yourself constantly. Do the first 2 'Fs' as you prepare to punch - Float like a Butterfly and Feel the Leather on your face, so your guard is up. then as you punch Follow Through with every punch. Tighten your fist as you do this (and wear wraps and solid gloves) and drive right through the target.
