Holding Punch Mitts for Boxing Training - 6 Steps to Holding for the Uppercut Punch

Have you got some boxing punch mitts but you're not sure how to use them? This article is about holding punch mitts (a.k.a focus pads) the correct way - especially for the uppercut. You might be working out with a with a friend, or you might be a trainer or coach. Just follow this step by step guide for holding mitts like a Pro, for the uppercut punch.

Step 1 - Learn the basic punch mitt holding position

Get into a boxer's stance - toe to toe, just like your boxer partner. Stand side on with the mitts just beneath shoulder height, with your elbows in close to your torso. Angle the mitts inwards. Now "peek-a-boo" through the punch-mitts. In other words they are close together, and you are in a strong, compact stance. You're ready.

Step 2 - Now, turn the punch mitt downwards to the floor

Keep the elbows tucked in close to your body and turn the mitt downwards to catch the uppercut. Open the face of the mitt, so your partner can see the "dot" on the mitt. You catch the left uppercut with your left and the right with your right - because you are standing opposite.

Step 3 - Don't be a whacker

Many beginner mitt-holders hit back too hard with the mitt. In my Boxing Trainers accreditation courses I call this whacking. It can hurt the boxers hands. Also they should be hitting the mitt, not the other way round. Catch the punch, don't whack it!

Step 4 - Concentrate

Make sure you concentrate at the precise moment the punch connects to the mitt. By bracing, your shoulder is protected, against the impact. Between combos you can relax, but when it's time to catch the punch, be fully focused.

Step 5 - Give them technique tips

Teaching tips can help bring the best out of your boxer or student. Tell them to "drop and drive" so they drop down before exploding upwards. You can also say "no bowling" because most people will swing with their arms, instead of using their core - like they are bowling a bowling ball. Different sport!

Step 6- Put it all together into Combos

Finally, once you've mastered catching the uppercut punch here are 4 combinations you can try with your student. Get the single uppercuts correct first - for the right and left.

Now get fighting fit.
