Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - 3 Ways to Improve Your Rear Naked Choke

Brazilian jiu jitsu is dominated by one attack more than any other, and that submission is the rear naked choke. This effectiveness of this attack can easily be understood by anyone who just happens to observe it. The basic mechanics are simple enough, one hand around the neck and one hand behind the neck. While this technique is simple it is not always simple to apply to a struggling opponent. These four tips can help you improve your chances of finishing this essential attack.

1) The Body Triangle

One of the most important aspects of finishing a submission in Brazilian jiu jitsu is keeping dominant position. When attempting to apply the rear naked choke you will most certain need to keep your opponents back or at the very least keep yourself positioned behind them. One of the most stable positions you can use to keep the back is the body triangle. Apply this position the same way you would apply a triangle choke submission from the guard. The difference here is that you will set the triangle around the waist of your opponent rather than the arm and neck. This technique is very difficult to break and will give you additional time to apply the submission.

2) Set Up without the Hooks

The traditional methodology in Brazilian jiu jitsu is position and then submission. One of the most effective ways to apply the rear naked choke is to go for the submission before you secure the back hooks. By taking this approach you have a very good chance of catching your opponent off guard, who is probably going to be focused on protecting against the hooks rather than protecting their neck once you get behind them. The submission is applied the same way without the hooks. Sometimes it can also help to position yourself off to one side of your opponent you are clamping down on the choke to prevent them from bucking you off with their hips.

3) Pressure the Chin

So you have good position, you are even getting your arms set up for the choke but you can't get the submission. While Brazilian jiu jitsu as a martial art is primarily about finesse and technique sometimes you just have to squeeze. If you can get your arm around the head of your opponent sometimes they will lower their chin down to their chest in anticipation of the attack. Don't be deterred right away, many times if you clamp down with consistent pressure your arm will slide under their chin.
