Choosing The Right Brazilian FightWear

By Ben Barker

In Japan, it is Karate, in China, it is Sumo wrestling and in Brazil, it is Jiu Jitsu. It is a kind of martial art originating in Brazil that has gained popularity much further afield. It is taught as a fight that is meant to be used in self defense, employing a lot of grabbing and wrestling moves. The moves will mostly be executed on the floor or the fighters will end up on it. An important aspect of this fight is the kind of Brazilian fightwear that the fighters wear. It is even believed that the gear worn during a fight influences their chances of winning or losing.

One unique feature about Jiu Jitsu is that the fighters sizes do not count at all. That is, unless the players have the techniques to take advantage of their larger size by employing moves such as joint locks and choke holds.

The whole fight requires fast thinking and high speed movements. Swift moves depends on being in fight wear that makes this possible. Brazilian fight gear includes shorts, pants kimonos, shin pads, boxing gloves, mitts and hand wraps.

During official fighting matches, having the right fight wear on is a must. The kit is made of lightweight fabric to keep the player comfortable. It is also made to be durable so that it does not tear as a player makes their moves, more so at the elbows and knees. Another requirement of the gear is that it is also has room but does not hang loose so that moving about is not obstructed. Kits made using pre-shrunk material is best.

Every kind of fight wear has a special purpose. For example, shorts with drawstrings or Velcro fastening are perfect for grappling thanks to their overall roominess. For choking moves, a kimono which has a chunky cotton collar or a rubber one will offer defense. Furthermore, a thick collar makes it tough for a competitor to keep his hold on for a long time when they make choking moves which is most advantageous.

Brazilian fight wear has to be verified by the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation. However, for events such as Jiu Jitsu no-gi, no stern conditions are placed. For instance, it is not compulsory for the uniform to have black shorts that have a white or black rash guard with a minimum of ten percent of it carrying the color of a rank or belt. However, the board shorts must be black. Women do have the option of wearing Lycra shorts or pants. Choosing womens gear which is cut and made especially for them is advised. Logos on the shorts or pants is permitted and so is a trim which can be of any color.

Another recommendation for the shorts is a crotch that is comfortable to cope with the riding up. A no-seam crotch and stretchy fabric that is long lasting keeps a fighter feeling comfortable.

Size is an important factor to consider. These Kimonos have different sizing from that of regular clothing. Height and weight charts made just for kimonos should be used in order to determine the right fitting.
